Pool Tables & Neon Lights — An Engagement Session at Southern Belle in Dayton, Ohio

Not every love story belongs in a field.

Some couples are more at home under neon lights than golden hour. More comfortable with a pool cue in hand than a bouquet of wildflowers. And honestly? Those are some of my favorite sessions to shoot.

When Brontè and Nick suggested Southern Belle for the second half of their engagement session, I knew immediately it was going to be something different. We'd spent the first part of the day at Midday Coffee; warm, easy, light-filled. The afternoon at Southern Belle was the other side of that coin. Moody. A little gritty. Completely them.

The Session

Southern Belle is a Dayton dive bar with real personality; pool tables, neon signs, a bar top worn in by years of good nights. It's not trying to be anything it isn't. And neither were Brontè and Nick.

We started at the pool table, which immediately broke any remaining ice. There's something about a game that makes people forget they're being photographed. Laughing over a missed shot, leaning across the table, that easy physical comfort that only comes with people who really know each other. It was all there within the first ten minutes.

From there we moved to the bar. Late afternoon light was sneaking in just enough to catch the edges of things, the glow of neon signs against dark walls, the warmth of the bar top, the way they kept gravitating toward each other even when I wasn't directing them to. That's always the moment I'm waiting for.

Why a Dive Bar Makes a Surprisingly Great Engagement Session Location

I think there's a version of engagement photography that a lot of couples feel like they're supposed to want. The vineyard. The overlook. The perfectly golden field. And those are beautiful, I shoot them all the time.

But the sessions that feel the most true are the ones that happen in places couples actually inhabit. The spots they go on a random Tuesday. The bar where they had their third date. The place that just feels like them.

Southern Belle in Dayton has atmosphere you can't manufacture. Dim lighting, interesting textures, neon color, and enough character to fill a whole gallery. If you've been sleeping on non-traditional engagement locations, this one is worth a second look.

A Note for Couples Considering This Location

  • Call ahead. Southern Belle was incredibly accommodating, but it's always worth reaching out before showing up with a camera. Most local spots are happy to work with you during slower hours.

  • Lean into the darkness. Don't try to fight the moody lighting, it's the whole point. Trust your photographer to work with it.

  • Bring your actual energy. This location rewards couples who are relaxed and playful. If you're a little goofy together, let that show. The pool table basically demands it.

Your Session Should Feel Like You!

If your relationship lives in places like this; local bars, late nights, your favorite hole-in-the-wall, your engagement session should too. I love finding the locations that actually tell your story, wherever that leads.
