The Kind of Wedding That Feels Like Home

An Intimate Backyard Wedding | Fairborn, Ohio

There are weddings that are big and loud and wonderful. And then there are weddings like this one. Quiet in the best possible way. The kind where you can hear the laughter from across the yard. Where you notice the way a mother watches her daughter walk toward the person she loves. Where the details aren't just decoration, they're devotion.

This October wedding took place at a private family home in Fairborn, Ohio. The mother of the bride opened her backyard, and somehow, it became the one of the most elegant venue I've ever photographed. Not because of a ballroom or a chandelier, but because of intention. Every single detail was chosen with love.

A Backyard That Became a Ballroom

When people hear "backyard wedding," they sometimes picture something casual, thrown together. This was the opposite. Long tables dressed in white linen stretched across the grass, set with warm terracotta napkins, wood accents, and small florals that felt like they'd been gathered that morning. The light that afternoon was golden and unhurried. It came through the trees just right.

I remember standing inside the house looking out through the front door at those tables, the yard beyond them, and the trees holding everything in. It looked like a painting.

The First Look

They did a first look and private vows tucked back near the tree line in the yard, away from everyone else. Just the two of them and the shade.

There was a wooden bench nearby, a birdbath with her bouquet resting on it; rich reds, deep oranges, blush, and wildflower greens. Warm, earthy, alive. It matched her perfectly.

Vows Written by Hand

They wrote their own vows and read them from small handbound booklets before their ceremony. Just the two of them. The ceremony itself was simple and open. Their guests forming a wide circle around them on the lawn, draped fabric floating above in the breeze. There was no stage, no altar to elevate them above anyone. Everyone was just… there. Present. Surrounding them.

Letters for Every Guest

This is the detail I keep coming back to. At every place setting, there was a handwritten letter written by the couple, addressed personally to each guest. I photographed one being read at the table. The person holding it was completely still, completely absorbed. That's what intentionality looks like. Not a favor bag, not a QR code for a playlist. A letter. Written by hand. For every single person who showed up.

The Feeling of the Day

October in Ohio can be unpredictable. This day was not. The sun was warm but not heavy. There was enough of a breeze to keep things comfortable and to move the ceremony draping just right. Everything felt unhurried. Calm. Like the day itself knew what it was holding.

As the photographer, my job is to follow the feeling. And on this day, the feeling was everywhere. In the way they held hands during the reception, his thumb moving over hers quietly. In the way her tattoos and her veil existed together so naturally, so completely her. In the way her mom's yard held all of it.

For the Couples Who Want This

If this looks like your kind of wedding; intimate, intentional, full of real feeling over performance, I would love to talk! I'm based in Dayton, Ohio, and I photograph weddings all over the state and beyond.

This is the kind of work I was made for.
